Danças na Cidade was created by Mónica Lapa in 1993. The festival and its many collaborative projects played a fundamental role in the development of the Portuguese and international dance scene between 1993 and 2004. In 2006, the organization changed its name to Alkantara and opened to other artistic disciplines and geographies. The Alkantara Festival is a biennial performing arts event in Lisbon that brings together artists with singular visions of our world and our times. In addition to the festival, Alkantara runs a year-long program of residencies, workshops, research projects, and presentations at its studio and office space, Espaço Alkantara.
