BRUNO BELTRÃO | BIO
Bruno Beltrão is born in 1979 in Niterói, close to Rio de Janeiro. His first encounter with urban dance is in 1993, and in 1996 he founds Grupo de Rua de Niterói with Rodrigo Bernardi. In the first two years of its existence, the company participates in festivals, events and television programs.
In 2000, Grupo participates in the international tour of "Metrópole" with French Director Pierrot Bidon’s Circo da Madrugada. In the same year, Beltrão begins his studies at the Faculty of Dance. In 2001, Beltrão premiers his duet "Do Poppin ao Pop ou Vice-Versa" (From Popping to Pop or Vice-Versa) at the festival Duos de Dança no SESC in Rio de Janeiro. This piece marks Bruno’s official debut in Rio’s contemporary dance scene and represents a first step towards the liberation of urban dance from pure virtuosity and the patterned reproduction of choreographic structures. Since then, the company’s experiments have been informed by exchanges between hip-hop and the inventive and critically reflective environment of contemporary dance. At the end of 2001, Bruno assumes total responsibility for the direction of Grupo da Rua. From 2002 onwards, the company enjoys a successful international career, presenting its creations at theaters and contemporary performing arts festivals the world over. In 2002, Beltrão is named Choreographer of the Year, O Globo newspaper describing him as "one of the most creative (choreographers) of his generation." In 2005 he is awarded Revelation of the Year in Choreography by Balletanz Yearbook. In 2008, APCA (São Paulo Association of Art Critics) names him Best Choreographer of the Year, and in 2009 his piece "H3" receives special mention from the Syndicat Profissionel de la Critique de Théatre, Musique et Danse, France. Aside from his creative work as a choreographer, Beltrão also fosters critical reflection and promotes urban dance, as a curator, participant in social intervention projects and as a thinker. His article Breakdance: Fissão e a Reação em cadeia (Breakdance: Fusion and Chain Reactions) appears in the volume Lições de Dança 2 (Lessons in Dance 2), published by UniverCidade. |
