“I was eleven years old, independence
was imminent, it was an early afternoon filled with sunshine,
very hot, full of expectations. Under a porch, on the rutty
ground, we were waiting to enter the stage. Outside the
public was arriving, meeting, and little by little moved
inside the pavilion.
I was wearing, as well as the other boys, a coloured capulana,
rolled up around the waist, with naked chest and barefoot.
It was then that we entered the improvised stage and, nervously
executed the steps, while singing “Wa'mutiva Txava Txava
Yuí anga'ni n'dlala ya Maheú .Yuí Wa'mutiva Caetano Yuí
Buyá gandzaia Salazar".
In 2005/06 Miguel Pereira worked
together with the egyptian choreographer Karima Mansour in
the framework of the project Encontros, co-organised by alkantara
and panorama rio dança. The result, Karima meets Lisboa meets
Miguel meets Cairo, turned out to be one of the most talked
about pieces of alkantara festival 2006 and is still touring.
“During my collaboration with Karima,” says Miguel, “I had
the opportunity to visit Cairo. Following this experience,
I was invited to participate in the East African Dance Meeting
in Kenya, to talk about my collaborative experience with
an artist from another culture. In Nairobi, and already well
inside Africa, I realized that I was on a descending line
towards the place where I was born, Lourenço Marques.”
