Jonathan Burrows started his career
as a soloist with the Royal Ballet in London but formed
the Jonathan Burrows Group in 1988 to present his own work,
gaining immediately an international reputation. In 2001
he presented Weak Dance Strong Questions, a collaboration
with the Dutch theatre director Jan Ritsema.
Matteo Fargion was born in Milan and studied composition
in South Africa and London. He met Jonathan Burrows in
1988, and has since written music for many of his pieces.
Matteo has also written music for Schaubühne Berlin, TAT
Frankfurt, Theaterhaus Stuttgart, Thomas Ostermeier and
Lynda Gaudreau.
In 2002, Jonathan and Matteo started working
on a trilogy of duets, opening with Both
Sitting Duet (2002)
and The Quiet Dance (2005). Speaking
Dance (2006) continues
their gentle exploration into how the relationship between
music and dance is percieved, and the fragile but permeable
boundaries between the two worlds. Their performances are
a formal but humourous meditation on the nature of communication,
and the relationship between each other and with the audience. "Captivating,
inscrutable, dazzling”, exclaimed The Daily Telegraph,
“This is 50 minutes of highly intelligent
fun”, added The
Independent.
