co-production alkantara

Since the beginning of 2007, Alkantara has been developing an artistic project in the neighbourhood of Cova da Moura, integrated in the project Nu Kre Bai Na Bu Onda, which means in creole “Let’s ride your wave”. Cova de Moura is inhabited by a community of mainly Cape Verdian immigrants and their descendents. Nu Kre Bai Na Bu Onda aims at developing artistic capacities and apetites, in a three year project by alkantara and the local organisations Associação Cultural Moinho da Juventude, Junta de Freguesia da Buraca and Associação de Solidariedade Social do Alto Cova da Moura.
In the area of dance, the project connects with the local dance group Wonderfull’s Kova M, composed of young women who meet twice a week to practice hip hop and traditional dances. The artistic direction was entrusted to the choreographer Filipa Francisco who, in recent years, has been developing her artistic work on the crossroads of art and social intervention. In a letter, she writes to choreographer Idoia Zabaleta: “If I could create a space for a body to move, what would it look like? Create spaces or use existing ones and plant them like mushrooms or viruses in waste lands, in townships like Cova da Moura or next to big theatres, could be an act of political intervention”.
After a year of training, rehearsals for a new creation took off. Íman draws upon the individual imaginary and the cultural patrimony of the performers and moves freely between traditional African dance, hip hop and contemporary dance, building bridges between worlds that rarely meet.
