Un an après… Titre provisoire of algerian choreographer Nacera Belaza seems to maintain a fragile equilibrium between intemporality and self-effacement. As if nothing were ever complete, always provisional. “Indeed, says the choreographer, I have the impression that, in the course of my creations, I have developed a poetics of emptiness, as if each of my creations needs to include the capacity to efface itself. An unawaited emptiness that fills all of our expectations… This could be my objective: to sculpt the void, give it a body, make it palpable, share it and finally let it dissolve in the infinite space of our bodies…”
As an autodidact, Nacera Belaza has developed a movement language, increasingly influenced by the re-approximation to the country and culture she left behind as a child. Not to the traditional dances, frozen in time, but to the idea of movement as a way of listening, closely related to Sufi philosophy: “from the intimate to the endless, the first act is one of listening. If I had to give a definition of this listening, I would say that it is the absence of any voluntary act, as if living wasn’t a verb, but a state, a world that receives another, my world observing the world…”. Out of the silence a piece of rare beauty unfolds.
