Bonanza is a unique film portrait of an abandoned mining
town. Once inhabited by over 6000 miners, traders, adventurers
and prostitutes and boasting 36 saloons and 7 dance halls,
it now is home to 7 permanent residents. In search of solitude
and spirituality, they find a world in miniature, with
its share of accusations, gossip, murder and fear.
Cities where you get to know all of the residents are rare.
But in Bonanza it is possible. Berlin portrays this microcosm
using a scale model of the city and five television screens.
The screens present the citizens of Bonanza, the scale
model gives the audience a lively experience of distances
and proportions.
Bonanza is the third part of the Holocene
cycle (the current geological period), a series of portraits
of towns and cities that also covers Jerusalem (2004),
Iqaluit (2005) and Moscow (2009). Berlin presents these
documentary videos in theatrical settings, minutely planned
and directed. Bonanza was selected as one of the best theatre
performances of Flanders and the Netherlands in 2007. The
jury report says: “Bonanza has no live performers, but
is definitely theatrical. Although many theatre companies
currently draw inspiration from film, Berlin takes this
tendency to its extreme. The result is impressive”.
